Steve Ewing and Compassion Alliance:

Ocala, FL—A local Ocala faith-based organization, Compassion Alliance, was recognized by Governor Crist as the recipient of the 2010 Humanitarian of the Year Award at the Governor’s Hurricane Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on May 28, 2010. The Awards Committee is composed of representatives from Florida Division of Emergency Management (FEMA), Florida Emergency Preparedness Association, American Red Cross and the National Weather Service and selects award recipients based on their activities and accomplishments.

Compassion Alliance reaches out locally and globally providing relief such as supplies, food and volunteers during hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes and other natural disasters. Specifically, the award recognizes their efforts, spanning their 5-year history, in providing more than $50 million in aid during such events as Hurricane Wilma, Hurricane Katrina, the 2007 Groundhog Day Tornadoes, Tropical Storm Fay, and the 2009 Spring Floods. Also, their current response to the earthquake disaster in Haiti has established them as one of the largest donators in the world giving aid to that country.

In addition to disaster relief, Compassion Alliance works to raise people above the cycle of poverty by providing training, ministry and other resources to help them help themselves. Partnerships with communities have resulted in the building of orphanages, churches and schools throughout the world. Internationally, containers of supplies have been shipped to Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Zambia, Timor, Sudan, Malawi, Niger, Indonesia, the Philippines, Swaziland, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda Zimbabwe and Albania.

Part of the State Emergency Response Team (SERT), the organization has an outstanding reputation among its partner organizations for donating its transportation services to bring life-saving relief supplies to disaster areas and has authorization to enter areas even before such groups as The National Guard and FEMA. Matt Caldwell:

(from http://www.votecaldwell.org)“We have worked very hard over these last few months and it is because of that hard work and your support that today, I am the Republican nominee for District 73 of the Florida House of Representatives. I am humbled and grateful by the sacrifices so many of you have made.  Without all of your help, this victory would not have been possible.

I also want to thank and congratulate Deanna, Jason, and John.  They were all worthy opponents and I wish them all the best in any future endeavors that they choose.

We ran a great campaign and I am very proud of my team.  We worked tirelessly in getting our message out.  Cleary the voters heard us and believed in us, but most importantly, they trusted us and I am truly honored by the trust that has been bestowed upon me.

From the beginning, I wanted to offer a clear alternative to the voters when they entered the ballot box.  That theme will remain constant throughout the next phase of this campaign, as I continue to go door to door meeting and listening to the people in all corners of the district.

Once again I’m going to ask for your help and support.  The victory we achieved was only the first step in this process.  We will be facing a well-funded and well-known Democratic candidate in the general election and your help will be critical to spreading our message. Again, thank you for your support.

God Bless You and God Bless the Great State of Florida.

Matt Caldwell”

jrnylcTwo middle school students from Ft. Myers Christian School experienced the trip of a lifetime. Sixth grader, Austin O’Grosky (group picture, far left) and 7th grader, Sarah Swiersz (pictured far left) attended the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) in Washington D.C. The students joined with other students from around the country to participate in a week that helps scholars develop and sharpen their leadership skills by examining the leaders of the past and empowering them to make a positive social impact in their community and the world. Geared toward looking at leadership through a practical, everyday lens, JrNYLC incorporates a detailed examination of eight leadership traits and focuses on leaders in American history and social advocacy. Distinctive site experiences, hands-on exercises and workshops bring these concepts to life, while students work together to develop action plans that affect change within their homes and communities.

Here are some quotes from the students on their experience:

- 7th grader, Sarah Swiersz: “My experiences at the Jr. National Young Leaders Conference showed me what a leader was.  The conference used American History to show us what a leader is… I read about MDA’s, Goodwill Ambassador, Mattie Stepanek, who served from 2001-2004.  I liked when he said “although ‘To be or not to be’ is a famous question, another famous question is ‘To do or not to do?’ in life.”  Too often, we choose not to do, because it is easier that way.  I thought that is really what makes you a leader.  My favorite part about the conference was that they didn’t just tell you to be a leader; they showed you leaders around D.C.  I feel the Jr.N.Y.L.C. was very beneficial and helped me to really become a better leader.”

- Sixth grader, Austin O’Grosky: “I loved Washington D.C… It was a great experience… Some of the things I got to experience were:  The Smithsonian Institute, sleeping over at the Maryland science museum, seeing the White House, seeing the Capitol and going to the Lincoln Memorial…we also learned about leadership.  I think I really grew as a leader and would encourage others to go too.”
